Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a routine check-up, ANI reported on Monday, 11 June.
The hospital, in a statement, said that Vajpayee's condition is stable and a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria are conducting a number of routine tests. Dr Guleria serves as the director of AIIMS.
Soon after Vajpayee was hospitalised, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited the former prime minister in AIIMS, on the evening of 11 June.
Shortly after Rahul Gandhi’s visit to AIIMS, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a beeline for the hospital as well.
Earlier in the day, AIIMS said in a statement to ANI:
The BJP leader served as India’s prime minister three times, the first for 15 days in 1996, the second for 13 months from March 1998 to April 1999, and the third for five years from 1999-2004.
As his health condition deteriorated, he withdrew from public life citing dementia and diabetes as reasons, and confined himself to his residence for many years.
