1. Modi Says Killing in Name of Gau Raksha Unacceptable, Rahul Calls PM’s Message ‘Too Little Too Late’

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to cow vigilantes on Thursday saying ‘it was too little too late’.

“Too little too late; words mean nothing when actions outdo them,” Gandhi was quoted as saying by PTI.

The Congress vice-president’s remarks comes hours after the Prime Minister sent a stern message to cow vigilantes in the country saying that killing in the name of cow is unacceptable. PM Modi was speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

2. GST Roll-Out: Arun Jaitley Asks Opposition to Revisit Decision on Skipping Midnight Launch

Criticising the Congress and Left parties decision to boycott the GST launch event at the Parliament Central Hall on the midnight of 30 June, Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday hoped they would reconsider their stand and support the roll-out. Calling GST as the single most important taxation reform in 70 years, Jaitley said the government remains committed to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as any other reform.

All the decisions regarding GST – including rules and tax rates – were taken in consultation with the states, political parties must display broad shoulder and own up their responsibility, Jaitley said.

3. Kovind to Meet AIADMK Factions Separately

On Saturday, NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind will visit Chennai, where separate meetings have been planned with the two factions of the ruling AIADMK.

One faction, led by VK Sasikala – which includes Chief Minister E Palaniswamy – and the other, led by former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, have pledged him their support. Even after securing the support of both factions, getting them into one photo-op in Chennai proved a problem, so the BJP leadership hit upon the idea of separate meetings.

Union Minister for Health JP Nadda, BJP general secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu P Muralidhar Rao and Mangaluru MP Nalin Kateel will accompany Mr Kovind.

4. China’s PLA Warns India: Learn Lessons From 1962 Defeat, Stop Clamouring For War

India should learn lessons from its defeat in 1962 and stop clamouring for a war, China warned on Thursday, saying the precondition for settling the current stand-off in the Sikkim sector is that New Delhi withdraws its troops immediately.

China said its troops were building a road in its own territory and not on the land that belonged to Bhutan.

People’s Liberation Army (PLA) spokesperson Wu Qian was reacting to Indian Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat’s statement that India was ready to take on China, Pakistan and internal security issues.

5. Vijay Mallya Had No Intention of Honouring Bank Loan, Claims CBI; Cites Email

Kingfisher Airlines chief Vijay Mallya had no intention of honouring a personal guarantee he had given to IDBI Bank, even before his now defunct private carrier allegedly got involved in a loan default worth Rs 900 crore, according to a supplementary chargesheet filed in the case by the CBI.

In the chargesheet filed last week in a Mumbai court against Mallya, and officials of Kingfisher Airlines and IDBI Bank, the CBI has sought to support its charge with a copy of an email allegedly sent by Mallya on 6 January 2012, to PA Murli, a senior official of United Spirits Limited (USL).

6. Meanwhile, a Meat Trader Is Lynched Near Ranchi

A meat trader succumbed to injuries on Thursday after he was assaulted by at least 10 men who intercepted his van carrying “cattle meat” in Ramgarh district near Ranchi, Jharkhand Police said.

Police identified the victim as Alimuddin Ansari, in his mid-30s, from the Giddi area of Ramgarh. They said the attack was linked to a dispute the trader had with the group, which had been extorting money from him over a period of time.

The attackers also set Ansari’s vehicle ablaze, said police, adding that “heavy security” has been deployed in the area to “maintain calm”. Ansari was rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, where he succumbed to injuries later in the day.

7. Kidnapped Boy Put up For Sale on WhatsApp

A two-and-a-half-year-old boy was kidnapped and allegedly put up for sale by three women, one of whom uploaded his picture on WhatsApp with a price tag of Rs 1.8 lakh. Police suspect the women were part of an illegal adoption and surrogacy racket.

The boy, abducted from outside Jama Masjid, was taken to six different places in the capital and bought in succession by the three women, all of whom wanted to sell him for a higher price, police said.

Cops got wind of the crime when one of the potential "buyers" saw the child's photo on WhatsApp and alerted them about it.

8. Varanasi Shocker: 70-Year-Old French Woman Raped by Security Guard, Hunt on to Nab Accused

A 70-year-old French woman was allegedly raped in Varanasi on Wednesday night by a security guard working at her rented residence, reported NDTV. The woman, a frequent visitor to the city since 1977, works with a local NGO in the Rohaniya area. The guard allegedly broke into her room in an inebriated condition, beat her up and took her cell phone before raping her. The guard is absconding.

The woman, who was later admitted to a district hospital, has undergone a check-up and is in a stable condition. A report from doctors is awaited.

9. Negative Atmosphere Being Created In Name Of Religion: Manmohan Singh

On a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at violence in the name of cow protection, former prime minister Manmohan Singh made a rare intervention to express concern at the kind of atmosphere being created in the name of religion in the country.

The backdrop of the former prime minister's remarks is a series of attacks on Muslims in different parts of the country, usually by cow vigilantes. On Wednesday, thousands of people had also come out in several part of the country under the "Not in My Name" campaign to protest mob violence and atrocities against Muslims and Dalits.
