While Bihar ‘fake topper’ Ruby Rai languishes in jail for not knowing what Political Science is, not too far off in Uttar Pradesh, another controversy linked to the state of Indian education is brewing.

This time, it’s not students, but teachers.

An associate professor of English, is unable to spell ‘evaluation’, says a Times of India report. A word he must often use in it’s verb form, while ‘evaluating’ papers.

An economics lecturer, according to the report, didn’t know what ‘audit’ was, and thought IMF stands for ‘International Money Fund’.

The matter gained prominence after the answer sheets for BA English, History and Economics were evaluated at the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (ITHM), the report said.

The teachers were “grilled” by the centre’s evaluation coordinator, and the matter came to light. Both the teachers have valid degrees, and are lecturers at colleges affiliated with UP universities, the report said.

Though the reports may make for an opportunity to scoff at their lack of knowledge, it is a reflection of a much deeper problem.

According to TOI, the teachers – Shyam Bahadur and Anil Kumar Patel – are associate professors of English and Economics at Mahatma Jyotika Phule Rohilkhand University and Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, respectively.

They have both been in the profession for more than a decade, said the report.
