Swara Bhasker is one of those rare actors from the Hindi film industry who dares to speak her mind and raise her voice on issues that bother her. Bhasker’s open letter to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Padmaavat being a case in point. More recently, Bhasker was among the many actors who protested against the Kathua rape case on social media.

While the right wing mob on social media called for a boycott of all the actors who had protested against the Kathua rape case because it was ostensibly “anti-Hindu” and “anti-national” (because of the mention of ‘devi sthan’ and ‘temple’), Bhasker prominently came under the line of their fire after Amazon India responded to a promotional tweet by the actor.

Soon after this tweet, #BoycottAmazon and #UninstallAmazon began trending on Twitter as the right wing lobby began to threaten Amazon India via tweets like this:

Amazon India, surprisingly was quick to surrender to the trolling and deleted their response to Swara Bhasker - which was immediately claimed as a sign of “victory” by the trolls.

However, the story didn’t end there. Amazon India’s act of deleting the tweet was obviously seen as act of pandering to a “pro-rapist” group by others.

Amazon India has been silent over their deletion of Swara Bhasker’s tweet so far. The Quint has requested team Amazon for a statement on the controversy and will update this story if and when it comes in. We have also reached out to Bhasker for a reaction but there has been no response from the actor so far.
