The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Officer on Special Duty for the Ministry of Home Affairs, as the Home Secretary.

Bhalla's appointment as the Home Secretary was a rather anticipated appointment, after he was made the officer on Special Duty in July.

The Appointment Committee of Cabinet is headed by Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi. Bhalla’s appointment came one month after the Appointment Committee made him the officer on Special Duty on 25 July.

Before being appointed as the OSD, Bhalla was serving as the power secretary.

Bhalla will have a fixed two-year tenure till August 2020.
