AISA Activist Alleges Harassment By ABVP Members at Delhi College

Kawalpreet Kaur, a student activist with the All India Students Association (AISA), has alleged that she was abused by ABVP members at Delhi's Satyawati College, where she was delivering a talk on Thursday, 23 February.

In a Facebook post, Kaur said that if not for the professors around her, she would have been 'hurt and killed there only'.

Speaking to The Quint about the alleged attack, Kaur said that around 40 ABVP members entered the venue of the talk and disrupted the events.

They charged towards me while I was seated in the front row – yelling ‘<i>Bahar nikalo ise</i>’. I was verbally abused.&nbsp;

While Kaur clarified that she was not physically manhandled by the ABVP members, she said some of the teachers who had formed a human chain around her were roughed up in the process.

We had to call the police, and with their help I was moved out of the auditorium. Even as I was making my way out, several members of the mob attempted to grab at me and restrain me from going outside.&nbsp;

Kaur has filed a complaint with the Bharat Nagar Police Station, but says she was initially refused by the officials at the station.

Kaur was reportedly speaking at an event on digital safety, organised by She the People TV.

Shaili Chopra, the founder of She the People TV, condemned the incident on Twitter.

Several activists too have come out to issue a joint statement condemning the ABVP’s alleged disruption of the event.

According to Kaur, two students involved in the alleged mob have been suspended by the college, and the staff association has unanimously decided to launch an inquiry into the incident.

However, an ABVP representative from the college has rubbished Kaur's claims of assault.

Speaking to Scroll, Saket Bahuguna said:

She was not touched by anyone. In fact, she pushed and verbally abused students of Satyawati College. She was constantly trying to instigate male students specifically.

Bahuguna also rejected Kaur's allegations of her phone being broken and stolen, saying that she wouldn't have been able to update her status on social media if that were true.
