After NDTV India was ordered to go off air on 9 November for its coverage of Pathankot attacks, the government has now issued a similar diktat for News Time Assam and Care World TV channels.
An I&B ministry order dated 2 November has directed the Assam news channel to go off air on 9 November for allegedly violating programming guidelines multiple times, becoming second channel to be taken off air for a week for alleged objectionable content.
The allegations against News Time Assam is that the channel telecast a programme which revealed the identity of a minor who had been brutally tortured while working as a domestic servant.
Having listened to the channel’s version, the Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) which looked into the matter felt that the channel may be taken off air for a day.
The order also lists two other cases of alleged violations by News Time Assam, one of them being related to telecast of gory visuals of dead bodies for which a recommendation was made to take off the channel for a day.
In another case the channel telecast a programme which allegedly appeared to defamatory towards to women and in bad taste. The IMC had asked the channel to run an apology scroll but since it did not comply, taking it off air for a day was recommended.
