As Kashmir remained tense after the Centre ordered deployment of additional troops in the Valley, DGP Dilbagh Singh, in a joint press briefing on Friday, 2 August, said reports about massive deployment of security forces in the state were exaggerated.

"We have had number of tasks over the past nine months like elections to panchayats, ULB and Parliament. Then the Amarnath Yatra is also going on... So the forces did not have any rest during this period. So some forces are being de-inducted while some are being inducted as replacement. The numbers in the media are exaggerated," Singh said.

The deployment of the troops and various orders had given rise to speculations about some major decision in the offing regarding the Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

According to reports, the Centre had ordered the deployment of 100 companies of additional troops in the valley.

A fresh government order asking tourists and Amarnath yatris to leave the Valley triggered even more panic among the residents on Friday as they started stocking up dry ration and essentials, fearing long law and order disturbance.

The deployment of additional troops had even created quite a buzz on social media, with many on Twitter speculating the reason behind the exercise.
