The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Tripura University, Vijaykumar Laxmikantrao Dharurkar, hoisted the flag of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organisation affiliated to the RSS, in an event that took place inside the campus on 10 July.

Defending this act, the VC said that the student group was a ‘social and cultural organisation’ not related to any party, reported The Indian Express. The event attended by him was organised by the ABVP to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s speech in Chicago.

“I went to the event as I was invited. And why wouldn’t I? The organisation you referred to (ABVP) is not an anti-national or terrorist organisation. It is a social and cultural organisation, which came into existence much before even the Jan Sangh. It is not related to any party,”
Vijaykumar Dharurkar

Dharukar further goes on to say that the event was about Swami Vivekananda’s speech and that there were speeches on tree plantations as well. According to him, there is no wrong in attending an event on campus organised by ABVP in his capacity as VC.

On being asked if he would hoist the flag of any other student organisation like SFI (Students Federation of India), the vice chancellor also said that he is open to all school of thoughts and supports all student bodies.
