The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday, 16 July, announced its decision to support joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the upcoming Presidential Elections.
"AAP will support Opposition's Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha. We respect Droupadi Murmu but we will vote for Yashwant Sinha," says AAP MP Sanjay Singh told media.
Sinha has also been backed in the presidential election by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's Telangana Rashtra Samithi and West Bengal's Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.
The presidential contest is between him and Droupadi Murmu, the candidate for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. You can read more about her here.
The AAP is the party in the country other than the two main national parties, the BJP and the Congress, that has governments in two states, that is, Delhi and Punjab.
It also has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha from both the aforementioned states including three from Delhi.
Given that the number of MLAs matters in the presidential election, it is pertinent note that AAP has 156 of them in total: 92 in Punjab, 62 in Delhi and two in Goa.
