Three prisoners escaped from the high-security Mathura jail in Uttar Pradesh early on 1 January, police said. Four jail officials have been suspended.
The under-trials, who escaped at around 2 am on New Year’s Day, were housed in the 'youth barracks', an official told IANS. They have been identified as Shera, Sanjay and Baldev.
Speaking to NDTV, Shailendra Kumar Maitreya, a jail official said:
Later in the day, jail wardens Vijay, Sonveer and Abhayram were placed under suspension, after a departmental probe was conducted by the Jail Superintendent.
A fourth prisoner, named Rahul, was caught when he fell down during his escape attempt. Prison authorities are interrogating him to ascertain the plans and whereabouts of the three fugitives.
