India evacuated 1052 of its nationals from Yemen on Monday. This takes the total number of nationals rescued from the strife-torn country to nearly 3,300.

Hundreds of people including Indians and foreign nationals were evacuated by the Indian Navy, as a part of ‘Operation Rahat’, from the main southern port city of Aden over the weekend, just hours before hostilities escalated there.

Fierce clashes raged between rebels and loyalists in southern Yemen, leaving more than 140 dead in 24 hours. The bloodiest fighting occurred between rebels and loyalists of Yemen’s President Hadi in Aden, reports AFP.

Meanwhile, 26 countries, including the US, Bangladesh and Iraq have sought India’s assistance in evacuating their nationals from Yemen.

The website of US Embassy in Yemen posted an ‘emergency message’ for its citizens asking them to contact an Indian Embassy official in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital.

Officials say there were around 5,000 Indians across Yemen of whom 1,000 were women married to Yemeni nationals.

The number of Indians in Saana would be around 3,000 while around 554 were in Aden and 298 in offshore oil fields.
