The Sri Lankan Navy has captured 15 Indian fishermen and seized 3 boats for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

Only yesterday, the Sri Lankan and Indian Government held talks to resolve underlying issues. Several measures have in fact been discussed through the years to solve the issue of fisherman straying into each country’s waters, but without an outcome.

What is the Tamil Fishermen Problem?

Indian fishermen, especially Tamil fishermen, have been at the centre of the storm.

Most fishermen enter the nautical border of Sri Lanka unknowingly but cases of smuggling are not unknown either.

54 fishermen were arrested in March while 37 of them were arrested in April.
