Youth Allegedly Beaten up for Refusing to Chant ‘Jai Mata Di’

The youths were asked to chant ‘Jai Mata Di’, but they refused, leading to a scuffle in which one boy was injured.

Three Madrassa students were beaten up in Delhi for refusing to chant ‘Jai Mata Di’. Five boys have been arrested in connection with this case. In the early reports, there was confusion about the slogan they were asked to chant – Bharat mata ki jai or Jai Mata Di. The victim who was most affected clarified on the actual slogan.

Attackers didn’t ask me to say ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ they asked me to say ‘Jai Mata di’, later they beat us up.

Dilkas (18) and two of his friends alleged that they were beaten up by three youths when they refused to chant a religious slogan at a park outside their school in outer Delhi’s Begumpur area.

We had gone to a park nearby, some men came and slapped one of my friends, asked him to say ‘Jai Mata di’. They said they would kill us if we don’t say ‘Jai Mata di’, ‘Jai Bharat’. But we didn’t say.

Mohd Dilkash’s left arm got fractured in the scuffle. The other two youths did not suffer serious injuries.

We were not even given a chance to say anything. We then called up our teacher, he came and called the police.

The madrassa teacher, identified as Mohd Azhar, said that the attackers had been arrested.

However, the police said that the boy did not mention being asked to chant anything in his statement on the day of the incident (March 26) and there were “inconsistencies” in his story.

The three boys were taken for a medical check-up after the police team arrived, in which no injuries were found on the bodies two of the boys, and one had a fracture. An X-ray confirmed the fracture.

The injured boy later told police that he was asked to chant “Jai Mata di” and his statement was recorded again.

After the police had recorded his second statement, they said they found out from sources that the boy had told others that he and his friends were asked to chant “Bharat Mata ki Jai”.

However, the boy has not mentioned having been asked to chant the slogan to the police yet, the official said.

A case has been registered under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) and the investigation is on.
