The University Grants Commission (UGC) Secretary Jaspal S Sandhu has asked universities to award degrees to students within 180 days of them becoming eligible for the degree or face “punitive action”.
The degree shall be dated within 180 days from the day results are declared as it is sufficient time to perform the task. Withholding the degree of a student who has successfully completed his tenure at the institute poses obstacles for them for further opportunities.
Under the punitive actions notified in Regulation 9 of UGC, the Commission can take action against universities including withholding grants.
