Adivasi leader and Aam Aadmi Party leader Soni Sori was attacked late Saturday evening in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist-hit Dantewada district by three unidentified men who allegedly hurled an acid-like chemical at her, police said.
Geedam SHO Vinod Kumar Tiwari told The Quint that unidentified men came on a bike and attacked her with a black grease like substance. The incident took place between 10:30 and 10:45 pm when Sori and two of her associates were headed towards Geedam on a motorcycle, a senior police official told PTI.
As per the statement of the victim, three youths on a motorcycle stopped them after crossing Bastanar Ghat and asked them to alight from their vehicle. One of them immediately hurled the liquid at her face following which the trio fled from the spot, the police offical said.
Her associates rushed her to the hospital in Geedam on a bike where doctors examined her. According to Tiwari, the doctor said the ointment-like substance was not dangerous and referred her to a hospital in Jagdalpur for further treatment.
Sori had complained of a burning sensation on her phone shortly after the incident took place. She is now under observation in a hospital in Jagdalpur.
Though the substance did not disfigure her face Sori said she suffered from a burning sensation, the official said to PTI.
Reports say a case has been registered and that the investigation has begun.
Soni Sori has been arrested in the past on charges of being a naxalite and has alleged torture and sexual harassment at the hands of the police.
