An undertrial prisoner committed suicide by hanging himself in cell number 5 of Tihar Jail on Saturday, 23 December.

The deceased, identified as Soniram, was a native of Uttar Pradesh and a resident of Central Jail Number 5. He was jailed under several cases of robbery and section 27 of Arms Act under the jurisdiction of Kashmiri Gate police station in February 2017.

Following the incident, ASI Rajender visited the spot and informed Duty MM Ruchika Aggarwal, who visited the spot and initiated proceedings under Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (inquiry by the magistrate into the cause of death).

No suicide note was found at the spot. Prima facie, the deceased had been depressed for the last few days, according to the police. The body has been preserved at the DDU hospital mortuary.
