Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu spoke up in Parliament today about the twin train tragedy that took place late Tuesday night.
Prabhu, during the course of Wednesday’s Rajya Sabha session, claimed that a track washout due to a swollen Machak river had led to the derailment of two trains at Harda in Madhya Pradesh.
The statement came after the House mourned the deceased in the train tragedy by standing in silence.
Amidst slogans raised by Congress members against the suspension of 25 MPs from the Lok Sabha, Prabhu said that his junior ministers would accompany him to the spot to look into the matter.
Seven coaches of the Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express as well as five bogies and the engine of the Mumbai-Jabalpur Janata Express derailed late last night between Khirkiya and Harda, about 160 km from Bhopal.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the Railway Minister would like to apprise the House of the facts of the accident – while Leader of the House, Arun Jaitley, egged Prabhu to rise and make his statement.
Chairman Hamid Ansari, meanwhile, declared that this was a procedural matter and members should allow the minister to make the statement.
