The BJP government has discontinued stamps featuring former Congress Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The stamps were a part of ‘Builders of Modern India’ series and were launched in December 2008.
A RTI query made by The Indian Express reveals that the Centre plans to introduce stamps featuring BJP founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee and other political leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Deendayal Upadhyaya and Ram Manohar Lohia.
This new series would be named ‘Makers of India’. The RTI further says that “stamps of denomination of rupees five have been discontinued” which had Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in it.
Apart from Indira and Rajiv, the Builders of Modern India also featured Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Ambedkar. The new series of 24 stamps will feature the latter personalities.
