Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Ladoora area following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into a gunbattle when the militants opened fire on the search party. "The cordon has been strengthened to prevent the militants from escaping," he said, adding that no casualties have been reported so far.

Khalid, believed to be a Pakistani resident, was one of the most wanted militant in the state and was involved in multiple killings in North Kashmir, Kashmir Observer quoted police sources as saying.

A few hours after the gunbattle, another encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists, in Shopian’s Gatipora village. Three Hizbul Mujahideen militants have been killed, and combing operations are still on.

This is the third incident in the day. Earlier a soldier of the 53 Rashtriya Rifles was killed after militants open fired in the Drang village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

The soldier, identified as Subedar Rajkumar, sustained a bullet injury in his thigh and succumbed to heavy blood loss, Greater Kashmir reported on Monday.

“A patrol party of a local army camp came under fire in Drang village. The fire was returned. However, one army man was killed in cross-fire,” Srinagar-based defense spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told Greater Kashmir.
