The grandnephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has served legal notices to the Indian National Congress, its party president, and vice president over a number of “defamatory” tweets posted from the party’s official handle, The Economic Times reports.

These tweets, which were posted in March, juxtapose the RSS ideologue with freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad, showing him in a poor light. One of the tweets, posted on the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, read, “Bhagat Singh waged war for Freedom from British Raj, VD Savarkar begged for mercy, to be a slave in British Raj.”

According to the report, this notice dated 16 June was sent by Ranjit Savarkar, grandnephew of the RSS stalwart, asking the Congress and its office bearers to tender an “unconditional apology” to the late Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and his family from the Indian National Congress’ official twitter handle within 48 hours of the date of receipt of the notice.

Yes, we have sent the notice of defamation to the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. This is pertaining to the official Twitter handle of INC which calls Savarkar a traitor.
