Sari Talk in Parliament: Supriya Sule’s Banter May Backfire?

Supriya Sule says MPs indulge in small talk in Parliament. Will it land her in trouble?

What was intended to be a light-hearted banter could backfire for Lok Sabha MP and senior NCP leader Supriya Sule.

Sule was speaking to a group of young girls at the ‘Anandicha Ustav 2016’ programme in Nasik about how one loses interest during lectures, when she cited the example of lengthy Parliament sessions.

<p> When I go to the Parliament, I hear the first speech, then a second and then a third. And in the fourth speech the speaker repeats what the earlier three spoke. And if you ask me what the fourth speaker said, I really can’t remember anything.</p>

She evoked laughter and applause from the audience when she said,

<p>You saw me talking to an MP from Chennai you might think we having a big discussion on the Chennai rains. We don’t discuss anything like that. ‘Where did you get your sari from, where did I get my sari from.’ We gossip all this. Don’t you gossip in the same way?</p>

Her comments could however, be misinterpreted at a time when Parliament is repeatedly being washed out and add to the perception that our lawmakers are probably not as serious as they ought to be.
