A sub-Inspector, identified as Akhtar Khan was killed in an encounter with criminals in Dadri on Monday morning, police said.
On a tip off that a wanted criminal, Sultan, was hiding at a house in Dadri, a police team reached the spot. Sultan, who is wanted in several cases of loot and murder, opened fire and an encounter ensued in which Khan was killed, they said.
Wahid also alleged that police personnel in the raiding team fled from the spot, leaving Akhtar alone. However, police officials have denied the charge.
The deceased, who hails from Aligarh is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Akhtar had joined the police as a constable in 1998 and was later promoted to the post of sub-Inspector. He was posted at the Dadri Police Station since June 2014.
One accused named Aurangzeb has been arrested in connection with the killing.
CM Akhilesh Yadav announced a compensation of 20 lakhs for the kin of the deceased.
