A medical team has allowed the Gujarat teenage rape survivor to terminate her pregnancy. She is currently 24 weeks pregnant. According to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, a woman is allowed an abortion only up to 20 weeks. Earlier, the team had denied the girl an abortion on medical grounds.
The parents of the girl had put in a petition, appealing that the girl should not be made to go through with the physical and mental torture of giving birth to a child, conceived out of rape.
When approached, the apex court had left the decision with the medical team, which has now given its approval.
