Government Announces New Norms for Deemed Universities

The Central government announced new regulations for deemed universities on Tuesday, reports Livemint.

The new rules – Deemed University Regulations 2016 – seek to provide increased curricular, administrative and regulatory freedom to private education providers.

The minimum area of land required for the campus, for instance, does not need to be declared to gain status of a deemed university.

The new rules have also allowed the promoters of institutions to be their chancellors.

The course curriculum must also be revised every three years, according to the new rules.

While this may help some institutes, the new rules may fail to settle the issue of off-campus centres of reputed institutions.

In accordance to the Deemed University Regulations, 2010, many top institutes including Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) “violated” the stipulated number of off-campus centres that they are allowed and were subsequently asked to shut them in November last year.
