Expel Mallya From RS With Immediate Effect: Ethics Committee

Earlier, Mallya’s resignation was rejected by the Rajya Sabha chairman on “procedural grounds”.

The Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha has recommended the expulsion of beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya with immediate effect.

The Committee hopes that by taking such stern action, a message would reach the general public that the Parliament is committed to take such steps as are necessary against erring Members to uphold the dignity and prestige of this great institution

The Upper House will now take a call on the recommendation of the report “on the non-disclosure of liabilities such as the loans taken from different banks in the assets and liabilities returns by Dr. Vijay Mallya”.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari had rejected Mallya’s resignation on grounds that it doesn’t conform to prescribed procedures and doesn’t bear his original signature. In his letter to Ansari Mallya claimed he does not expect to get “a fair trial or justice.”

On 25 April, the Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha gave Mallya a week to explain his conduct in the default on bank loans in excess of Rs 9,000 crore extended to his Kingfisher Airlines. Before that, the government had revoked Mallya’s diplomatic passport in an effort to get the businessman to return to India.
