Ex-DU Professor SAR Geelani, accused on sedition charges has been granted bail by a Delhi Court on Saturday. He was arrested in connection with an event held at the Press Club in Delhi. Additional Sessions Judge had reserved the order for Saturday after Geelani’s counsel presented his argument. Geelani’s lawyer claimed that there was no evidence that Geelani had raised alleged anti-India slogans, adding that criticising the Supreme Court judgement was not contempt of court.
Delhi Police, on Saturday, had opposed Geelani’s the bail plea, saying the event was “an attack on the soul of India” and it was “contempt of court.”
Geelani’s counsel, however, sought bail, claiming that as per the FIR itself, the people raising slogans were stopped by office bearers of the Press Club of India and were asked to leave the venue which they agreed to.
