Flights scheduled for departure from the Delhi airport were delayed between 7:30 am to 9:30 am on Thursday, 3 January, due to dense fog enveloping the city.

Flight schedules were affected as visibility in Palam, where the Indira Gandhi International Airport is located, dropped to 50 metres, reported Hindustan Times.

Eight flights were diverted and many arrivals were also delayed, the report said. Visibility dropped to 200 metres at Safdarjung on Thursday morning.

An India Meteorological Department official told HT:

“As the sky would become cloudy, the night temperature is expected to rise further and may touch 9 degrees by Sunday. The day temperature is likely to drop to around 18 degrees Celsius.”

According to the Met department, the city could also receive light rain and thundershower over the weekend.

December 2018 was the coldest December in 13 years, but foggy days in December were the fewest in 22 years.
