Cold wave intensifies in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, Dec 29 (IANS) Cold wave conditions intensified in most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Saturday with Adampur town in Punjab recording a freezing minus 1.7 degree Celsius, Met officials said.
While Hisar town with a low of 0.3 degree was the coldest in Haryana the Sikh holy city of Amritsar recorded a low of 0.8 degree Celsius, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
Faridkot and Pathankot towns in Punjab recorded minimum temperatures of 0.4 and 1.7 degree, respectively.
Narnaul and Rohtak towns in Haryana recorded lows of 0.7 and 2.2 degrees. Karnal town had a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius.
Dense fog prevailed at several places, especially along highways. Road and rail traffic was affected due to the fog in both states.
The dense fog claimed seven lives when an unidentified heavy vehicle hit two cars on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway in Haryana early on Saturday, police said.
Chandigarh recorded a low of 4.4 degrees on Saturday.
The minimum temperatures at most places were one to five degrees below average. Ludhiana and Patiala cities in Punjab recorded lows of 2.7 and 4.6 degrees, respectively.
The Met department has issued a warning of several cold wave conditions for the next two days in most parts of Punjab and Haryana.
The weather is likely to remain dry for the next 96 hours, followed by rainfall in some areas.
