  • The Supreme Court refused to put a stay on the release of Udta Punjab, quashing an appeal by Punjab-based NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, on Thursday.

  • The NGO, on Wednesday sought to put on hold the screening of the controversial film, as it supposedly projected the state in a bad light.

  • The NGO told a Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice L Nageshwara Rao that the Bombay High Court, which cleared the screening of the film with one cut, should not have interfered with the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

  • Earlier, the Bombay High Court directed the producer of Udta Punjab to make one cut and insert three disclaimers saying, among other things, that the film did not promote drug use.
