What’s in a Name? Bombay, Calcutta and Madras HCs Rechristened
The courts will now be called Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai high courts.

The Union Cabinet today approved a Law Ministry proposal to change names of high courts through an Act of Parliament to correspond to the present names of the cities Mumbai, Chennai and Madras.
There have been demands to rename the high courts as Mumbai High Court and Chennai High Court after the cities were rechristened in 1990s.
The Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced today that Bombay High Court will now be renamed as Mumbai High Court. Similarly, Calcutta HC will now be Kolkata HC and Madras HC will be Chennai HC.
