A baby girl, considered to be the ‘heaviest’ in the country, was born to 19-year-old Nandini from Hassan district, Karnataka. The infant weighs about 6.82 kilograms, and was born on 23 May, at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS).

The baby was delivered after conducting a caesarean surgery. It is the heaviest baby so far in India. The last one reported was somewhere around 5.8 kg.
Dr Shankar, Medical Superintendent, HIMS

Both the baby and mother are healthy, but since the case is “unusual” doctors have decided to keep the baby under observation and are assessing the reason for the over weight. “We have done the abdominal scanning of the baby, we will be doing blood test as well,” Dr Shankar said.
