The arrest of two operatives of al-Qaeda in the Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) has revealed that the terror outfit was planning an attack on senior government leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and public targets like the Delhi Metro.

Mohammed Asif, the founder-member and chief recruiter of AQIS and Abdul Rehman, a cleric and social network recruiter of the outfit, were arrested by the Special Cell of the police, according to The Times of India.

Asif was motivating UP men to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP functionaries or the party office on Ashoka Road; Rehman was recruiting people and planning to blow up Delhi Metro or any vital installation in the city in the next fortnight. Special cell sleuths claimed that Asif was also present at Miranshah along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border when AQIS was founded in 2013. The intelligence bureau was tracking the movements of AQIS members since its media wing, Al Sabab, released a video in September 2014 where al-Qaeda chief Ayman al Zawahiri gave a call for Jihad in the subcontinent.
