Soon after a number of filmmakers announced their decision to return their awards, actor and former chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification, Anumpan Kher, took to Twitter to voice his strong criticism of the decision.

In a series of tweets, Kher said that the filmmakers’ decision is an insult to the Censor Board jury and the audience. He went on to imply that the decision is politically motivated and that some of these filmmakers were politically opposed to the Modi government and never wanted Narendra Modi at the helm to begin with.

He also added that those involved were “instrumental” in removing him from his position in the Censor Board, “the moment the Congress government came to power.”

Filmmakers have been returning their awards to protest growing intolerance in the country. The move came soon after the students of the FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) called off their 139-day strike on Wednesday.
