The death toll has risen to 72 in Odisha on Friday, as a heatwave across India made April the hottest month in the last five years.
The temperature in various districts of Odisha ranged from 46°C to 47.5°C.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted at least five to seven more days of high temperatures in the state.
Summer holidays in schools have been extended till 26 May, although the state government has decided to continue with the mid-day meals throughout the vacation.
