Two agents reportedly chopped off toes and fingers of 60-year-old Chamru Paharia, who had been trafficked for bonded labour. The incident took place at a construction site in Maharashtra’s Nagpur when Chamru, resident of Tikarpada village in Komna block of Nuapada district in Odisha, asked for his wages, reported The New Indian Express.

The traffickers, Dolal Satnami and Bidesi Sunami had persuaded him to work at a construction site in Maharashtra. Around one and a half months ago, the duo refused to pay him his wages.

Chamru then blamed them for deceiving him, following which the two agents reportedly chopped his right feet’s five fingers and tried to cut fingers of his right hand, added the report. After cutting three fingers, they stopped, as he became unconscious. Then, Satnami and Sunami left Chamru near Nagpur railway station.

A RPF personnel saw the victim near the railway tracks and took him to a hospital in Nagpur city. They made attempts of contacting Chamru’s son and other people whom he knows, but were not able to connect to any of them. Few days ago, Chamru managed to move out of the hospital and reached the railway station.

By taking help of people at the station, he managed to buy a ticket to go to his village. On Friday, 4 October, Chamru got down at Harishankar Road station in Balangir where he was identified by Tofan Dalpati, a samiti member of his village. Dalpati then took him to the village.

However, as Chamru was scared that people related to Satnami and Sunani might cause him harm, he refused to undergo any kind of treatment, reported The New Indian Express.

On Saturday, 5 October, Nuapada MLA Rajendra Dholakia met Chamru and gave him a total of Rs 1000. Further, he told the villagers that they should get him treated. Dholakia also assured that he will make efforts to get some financial help from Chief Minister’s relief fund for the victim.

A NHRC complaint has also been filed.
