In big news regarding climate change, PM Modi on Sunday announced that India will be ratifying the Paris Agreement on 2 October, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
While 60 other nations have already signed the agreement, the government had announced that they wouldn’t be ready to do so before 2017.
In a time when climate change and global warming are an important point of discussion worldwide, PM Modi at the Deendayal Upadhyaya centenary celebrations in Kozhikode said that the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader had almost 50 years ago stressed on the importance of respecting the resources available to us.
The countries who have currently signed the Agreement represent 48 percent of emissions. However, 55 countries representing at least 55 percent of global emissions are needed to trigger the Agreement to enter into force 30 days hence.
Ban Ki-Moon, who has made climate change a top priority since he became secretary-general nearly 10 years ago, has been urging world leaders to bring the Paris Agreement into force by the end of the year.
On 21 September, 31 new countries ratified the agreement on climate change in a special event hosted by Ban Ki-Moon.
