Admissions in engineering colleges have hit a legal hurdle as the Supreme Court, on 7 July, stayed the counselling and admission process in IITs, IIITs, NITs and other colleges.

The court was hearing a plea challenging Indian Institute of Technology’s (IITs) decision to grant grace marks to students for misprinted questions in this year’s IIT-JEE exam. The plea sought the apex court to stay the counselling for admissions to IITs. It also appealed to the court to direct IITs to revise the merit list after removing the grace marks.

The JEE Advanced 2017 was conducted on 21 May. The IITs decided to give bonus marks to students who attempted ‘wrong’ questions, sparking a controversy.

Details awaited.
