The Ministry of Human Resource Development’s National Institutional Ranking Framework released its rankings of the top colleges of India for the year 2018.

But why would you care?

Let’s try spicing this up a bit: In the list, Miranda House of Delhi University has trumped the holy, mighty St STEPHEN’S!

In case you accuse the rankings of having no scientific basis (understandable, given the rampant rise of #FakeNews), the parameters are listed in a detailed way here, and include things like faculty-student ratio, research and professional practice, graduation and higher studies outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and peer perception.

Now, ever since the news broke, we hear WhatsApp groups of Stephen’s’ illustrious alumni base have been inundated with messages of ‘WTF’, ‘How is this even possible’, and some major eye rolls! Lady Shri Ram women too are in disbelief over how they have slipped to number 8 from last year’s ranking of number 7.

But we assure you, this isn’t an exasperating farrago of distortions. Last year too, Miranda House had secured the top spot, while Shri Ram College of Commerce had come third.

Among the Indian Institutes of Technology, Chennai has shown the others the way, just like it did last year.

On the other hand, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has once again retained the numero uno position in the university category.

What can we say, haar jeet to hoti rehti hai. But to the winners this year, may we also add, let the college one-upmanship begin!
