The controversy around newly-elected Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) President Ankiv Baisoya’s alleged fake degree deepened after the Thiruvalluvar University, where Baisoya claimed to have graduated from, denied his admission and confirmed that the degree certificate is fake.
The Congress-led National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had sent Baisoya’s degree to the University for verification. The University in turn sent a reply rejecting Baisoya’s claims of having graduated from their institution.
Speaking to The Hindu, V Peruvalluthi, registrar in charge of Thiruvalluvar University, said:
The NSUI has now written to the Delhi University’s vice-chancellor on student leader Ankiv Baisoya’s fake degree submission to get admission in DU’s department of Buddhist Studies.
Baisoya, a student leader from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), found himself in a soup after his graduation degree from Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvalluvar University was declared as fake.
The furore started after NSUI claimed on Tuesday, 18 September, that the marksheet submitted to DU by Baisoya was fake.
Baisoya, however, has denied the allegations and gone ahead to conduct a havan at the DUSU office before taking charge on Wednesday, 19 September.
However, ABVP is waiting for a verification on Baisoya’s degree from DU. Monika Choudhary, National Media Convenor of ABVP, told The Quint, “Delhi University has taken cognisance and has the right to verify Ankiv's documents. They have a complete procedure of doing it. We are waiting for the DU's stand on this issue and will give our stand now only after DU gives any stand on this issue.”
Meanwhile, the NSUI’s claim was made after an independent verification, Saimon Farooqui, NSUI national secretary and media in-charge, told The Quint.
“We cross-checked ABVP candidate Ankiv Baisoya’s academic qualification with Thiruvalluvar University but surprisingly, they have denied his admission and called it a fake certificate,” Farooqui told The Quint.
Talking to The Quint, the newly elected president of DUSU office said that he has graduated with 66 percent from Thiruvalluvar University in Tamil Nadu.
“I graduated with 66 percent and I was granted admission in DU’s Department of Buddhist Studies after due diligence by Delhi University,” Baisoya told The Quint, adding that all his original documents are submitted with Delhi University’s administration.
Baisoya further said this is ‘a cheap tactic’ by NSUI who have ‘lost their temper’ after losing to ABVP.
In a statement released earlier on Tuesday, the ABVP termed the allegation by the NSUI a propaganda and said it is not the NSUI’s job to provide certificates to any person.
"Delhi University gave admission to Ankiv Baisoya after due verification of its documents. It's the process of DU. Even today, DU has all the rights to verify documents of any student enrolled in the university. But it's not the job of NSUI to provide certificates to any person,” the statement read.
The RSS-affiliated student outfit bagged three posts, including that of the president, in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections last week.
Baisoya won the presidential post with a margin of 1,744 votes while ABVP's Shakti Singh was declared the vice president after he won with a margin of 7,673 votes.
NSUI's Akash Choudhary won the secretary's post while ABVP's Jyoti emerged victorious in the joint secretary post.
