Does your bachelor’s degree matter in today’s day and age? Not really! Especially when one considers the options that are available for Commerce students in terms of certifications and jobs for freshers. That’s the advice from career counsellor Zubin Malhotra, who believes that even those who opt for distance learning mode can add value to their CV by working in their free time.

If you are going through the correspondence route, it also means that you’ve got three years with far more free time than a regular student. A lot of students who do take up the correspondence course simultaneously pursue certifications such as Chartered Accountancy (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Company Secretary (CS).

In addition to applying for the BCom and BCom Honours program, experts believe that courses such as BFIA (Bachelor of Financial and Investment Analysis), BBE (Bachelor of Business Economics) and BBS (Bachelor of Business Studies) could be taken up as an alternative to traditional courses available at the University of Delhi. For those eyeing the 90 percent mark and wondering whether they should try their luck with the BCom Honours programme, a word of caution:

Certainly, if it’s exactly 90 percent with all the four subjects, BCom Honours at top ten colleges might be a little difficult. Still, in your application form, please do select that option. My advice to students is that since there is no additional charge for the number of courses or the number of colleges that you need to select, please be very generous with where all you’re ticking ‘Yes’.

For female students who have scored 60 percent in class 12, the University of Delhi offers classes in quasi-regular mode, commonly referred to as the Non Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB), with classes being held on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

In case you have already made up your mind about pursuing MBA after graduation, then a five-year integrated course may not be a bad idea.
