The Indian equity benchmarks closed on a low on new year’s eve, Tuesday, 31 December, with the S&P BSE Sensex shedding 0.73 percent to settle at 41,253.74 points and the NSE Nifty 50 plunging 0.71 percent to 12,168.45.

This was the last trading session of the year.

Overall, Indian equity benchmarks registered their second-best yearly gains in five years as Sensex returned 14.3 percent and the NSE Nifty 50 advanced more than 12 percent, BloombergQuint reported.

The markets opened lower on Tuesday due to declines of HDFC twins, with Sensex falling 0.15 percent to 41,490 and Nifty 50 falling 0.18 percent to 12,234. The broader markets represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index fell 0.13 percent.
