Equity indices Sensex and Nifty registered heavy gains on Thursday, 16 May, as all sectoral sub-indices finished in the green at closing bell.
30-share BSE Sensex gained 278.60 points to close at 37,393.48, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty finished at 11,257.10, up 100.10 points. Both the indices gained almost a percent.
The markets opened on a cautious note on Thursday amid nixed signals. According to traders, sustained foreign fund outflow kept weighing on investor sentiment here.
On the currency front, rupee appreciated marginally to 70.31 against the US dollar in early trade.
Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.56 per cent higher at $ 72.17 per barrel.
Among sectoral sub-indices, Nifty Media and Nifty Metal gained the most.
Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors and Infosys stocks were the top gainers while Yes Bank, Bharti Airtel and IndusInd Bank lost the most.
