‘In the woods there is perpetual youth’, this quote, comprising exactly 7 words, from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay titled Nature leads to an involuntary curving of the mouth translating to a smile. The American essayist, lecturer, and poet, was dismissed in 1836 for pandering frivolous beliefs. In the 21st century though the writing takes on a paler shade of green. In cities that are fast gobbling green spaces in their hunger for development & connectivity, peace & tranquillity and our childlike sense of wonder become collaterals. We seek havens, hundreds of miles away from our cities, for our children to have a semblance of the natural world.

But when news feeds are choking on reports of cities dying a ‘death by breath’, Godrej Properties’ Flagship Project: The Trees, a mixed-use development project, is a welcome disruptive innovation in the urban development sphere (Click here for more information). Nestled in Vikhroli, where the Godrej family has been taking care of over 1,750 acres of mangroves for more than 6 decades, The Trees will house commercial spaces like their current headquarters, Godrej One suitably separated from residential spaces co-existing with the lush, green and hardy mangroves.

Within its premises future residents will also find a 5 star luxury hotel, cultural buildings and high street retail. The design revolves around not just the usual concepts of mobility and convenience but also that of encouraging a lively community.

Sustainable living seems to be at the core of The Trees. The vision of the development prides itself on saving over 90% of the mature tree cover along with many other aspects in compliance with green building standards leading to an IGBC Platinum Rating. Residential spaces are designed in a way to let in as much natural light and air as possible. Solar water heaters, low-flow fixtures along with zero disposal will be steering the residents towards a greater level of eco-consciousness.

The project, launched in the last week of November, 2015, is scheduled to be completed over 3 residential phases. Within the very first week of its first phase The Trees sold over 300 residential units making it the most successful project in the history of the company. The future residents of this property can look forward to pedestrian walkways connecting the neighbourhood clubhouse, a fine dining restaurant set amidst tree canopies, the culture spaces and Wi-Fi plazas.

The goalpost for success has changed. A hefty bank account is fat shamed if not accompanied with ‘experiential living’. Slow fashion is fast taking over the luxury clothing labels. And our inherent need to live in harmony is helping us seek a life in sync with nature.
