EU leaders on Friday reached an agreement to work for carbon neutrality by 2050 — but without the agreement of coal-hungry Poland.
The US Trump administration and China are close to finalising a modest trade agreement that would suspend tariffs that are set to kick in on Sunday, de-escalating their 17-month trade war.
"We're close to a deal,'' said Myron Brilliant, the US Chamber of Commerce's head of international affairs, who has been briefed by both sides.
Brilliant said the administration has agreed to suspend Trump's plans to impose tariffs on $160 billion in Chinese imports on Sunday and to reduce existing tariffs, though it wasn't clear by how much.

Searchers combing Antarctic seas have recovered parts of a military transport plane and human remains belonging to some of the 38 people aboard who vanished en route to the frozen continent, Chilean officials said on Thursday.
Air Force General Arturo Merino said at a news conference that based on the condition of the remains, he believed it would be “practically impossible” that any survivors would be pulled from the water alive.
An international team of searchers continued the hunt, while officials on shore said they would use DNA analysis to identify the crash victims.

The Supreme Court on Friday said that it will constitute a larger Constitutional bench which will hear the review petitions in connection with the Sabarimala Temple matter at the earliest.
The court also granted police protection to women – Bindu Ammini and Rehana Fathima – till further hearing in the case.
"There is a judgment (allowing women entry) in the Sabarimala temple, but it is equally true that the issue has been referred to a larger bench. We do not want any violence,” CJI Bobde observed.

At least 25 people have been injured in an explosion in eastern Germany, according to police.
A news agency quoted police spokesman Uwe Becker as saying that he couldn't rule out the number of people hurt in the explosion in Blankenburg, in the Harz mountains, being higher.
Regional public broadcaster MDR reported that the explosion happened Friday morning in a residential building. Further details weren't immediately available.
The repercussions of the split in the BJP-Shiv Sena saffron alliance after the Maharashtra polls were felt in the Aurangabad civic body, which is being ruled by the two estranged allies, with BJP's Deputy Mayor of the city, Vijay Autade, resigning from his post on Friday.

A 32-year-old woman on Friday tried to commit suicide by jumping off the third floor of state secretariat `Mantralaya' in south Mumbai, but survived as she landed in safety net.
The incident took place in the afternoon, the police said.
The woman, who was taken into custody by the police, is resident of Ulhasnagar in neighbouring Thane district, an official said.
A safety net was installed on the second storey of the secretariat following similar suicide attempts in the past.
Two Army personnel were injured in unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops on forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Friday, officials said.
The jawans suffered minor injuries when Pakistani troops resorted to small arms firing on the forward posts in Keri sector in the early hours, they said.
The officials said the Indian Army retaliated to the Pakistan ceasefire violation and the exchange of firing between the two sides lasted for a brief period.
The casualties suffered by the Pakistani side in the retaliatory action was not known immediately, they said.
