Seven boys, who had appeared for their Class 10 board examinations, were apprehended on Sunday, 1 March for allegedly raping and killing a 12-year-old girl in Assam's Biswanath district, police said. The girl was hanged from a tree after the crime.
The incident happened on Friday, 28 February in Chakla village under the jurisdiction of Gohpur police station, they said. The body was found on Saturday, 29 February.
The seven culprits, all of them High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinees, have been nabbed by a police team.
The accused, after their school examination, had called the victim to a house on the pretext of organising a party and raped her, the officer said. According to the family of the victim, she went missing on Friday night.
“When we could not find her on Friday night, we thought she was kidnapped. We filed an FIR on Saturday morning,” said the victim’s father, a farmer, as reported by the Indian Express. “They raped her in the forest at night and murdered her,” he alleged.
The police have reportedly registered the case under Section 366(A), 376 DB, 34 of the IPC and R/W Section 4 A of the POSCO Act.
Following the incident, students from the Takam Mising Porin Kébang (All Mising Students’ Union) along with the general public, organised a protest at the local police station, on Monday.
