“If you don’t enjoy cooking it as much as you enjoy eating it, then it isn’t Nahari!” quipped a confident Mehtaab Bhai, the owner of ‘Javed Ki Famous Nahari’.

Mehtaab Bhai’s sentiment is a common one; it echoes throughout Zakir Nagar in Delhi.

It’s the holy month of Ramadan and what better way to break your fast than with a sumptuous plate of Nahari, served with fluffy Khameeri Roti!

The Legend of ‘Javed Ki Famous Nahari

Tucked in the narrow by-lanes of Zakir Nagar is a humble shop called ‘Javed Ki Famous Nahari’. Aditya Kaushal aka RJ Addy visited the shop to decode the secret behind its mouth-watering legacy.

For the past twenty-five years, the place has been serving the ancient delicacy, Nahari. Currently, it is run by Mr Mehtaab and his two brothers Wazir and Javed.

The shop opens around six in the evening for Iftar and continues to remain open throughout the night, closing only after Seheri — the meal eaten at the break of dawn during Ramadan.

Around 50 Kg meat is cooked everyday in the shop and it’s all gone within a matter of two or three hours!

RJ Addy Takes up the Challenge

Cooking 50 Kg meat is not an easy task, but RJ Addy is ready to take up the challenge.

From the cooking vessels to the utensils, everything is of industrial scale in Mehtaab Bhai’s kitchen! He only agrees to reveal part of the recipe, keeping the secret ingredients to himself.

I’ll show you the entire process, but I won’t tell you about our secret ingredients.

As the Nahari is left to cook — the whole process takes up to five hours — RJ Addy attempts to figure out the importance of Ramadan.

Ramadan falls in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. Muslims around the world fast for 28-30 days from dawn to dusk, according to the sighting of the moon. It is believed that the Holy Quran was first revealed in the month of Ramadan.

This Ramadan do head to Zakir Nagar to try one of the best Nahari that the city of Delhi has to offer!
