On 3 May 2018, Google released it’s first ever Virtual Reality (VR) doodle to commemorate the 106th release anniversary of legendary French illusionist and filmmaker Georges Méliès’ most noteworthy work À la Conquête du Pôle or The Conquest of the Pole.
The Doodle is called “Back To The Moon” and runs for about 2 minutes. The video takes the viewers on journey with an illusionist who tries to impress the “Queen of Hearts” and fights off the villain who tries to separate them.
The doodle, which was developed jointly by the Google doodle team and the company’s in-house VR studio Spotlight Stories, pays a tribute to Méliès’ groundbreaking innovations in the world of cinematic art by incorporating various elements of fantasy.
It seems fitting that an artist like Méliès, who continually pushed the boundaries in the world of cinema and visual arts, is honoured with the first ever 360 VR doodle the world has ever witnessed.
The doodle generated a lot of positive buzz on Twitter and many users took to the platform to express appreciation.
