After obsessing over Sonam Kapoor’s wedding, stalking her on Instagram, some thought the frenzy would end. They couldn’t have been more wrong. Right after her wedding, Sonam went onto Instagram and updated her profile to “sonamkapoorahuja”. After changing her name on Instagram, she changed it on Facebook and Twitter too. And guess what, not everyone was happy.

What’s in a (sur)name?

Why did she change her name to Sonam Kapoor Ahuja.

Seeing the debate unfold, we asked the women at The Quint to respond. And they were of varying opinions.

While some said taking her husband’s last name didn’t make the actor any less of a feminist, others were of the view that her choice, which may be rooted in patriarchy, reinforced the values that only extend to women.

There were also some who said there was no point talking about a celebrity’s decision to change her name when we have more pressing issues at hand.

Kapoor and her long-time beau, Anand Ahuja, tied the knot on the morning of 8 May at the actor’s aunt’s home in Bandra in a traditional Sikh ceremony. It was followed by a reception party for the newly-weds on Monday evening.
