‘Diet Sabya’, a self-appointed watchdog of the fashion industry that calls out designers on Instagram for unoriginal designs, can be a nightmare for serial cheaters.
On 21 January, Diet Sabya called out Cosmopolitan India’s cover page that featured actor Janhvi Kapoor. Kapoor, who was styled by Cosmopolitan India, was caught in the eye of the storm when Diet Sabya posted this on Instagram.
Balmain’s original design on the runway:
Diet Sabya has named a stylist called ‘Purple Paisley’ in their post, claiming that the stylist had ripped off Balmain’s design. In the post, they also used the hashtag, ‘gandi copy’.
The stylist's Instagram feed still has Janhvi Kapoor’s photo on it. No apology has been issued yet.
The strange part, however, is that Janhvi Kapoor is being trolled for wearing what she did. What the trolls seem to not understand is that the actor is not solely responsible for what he or she wears for magazine covers. The designers and the stylists shoulder the responsibility and should ensure that nothing should border on plagiarism.
On 25 November 2018, Diet Sabya had also called out Riddhima Kapoor Sahni for blatantly plagiarising the work of a veteran jeweller designer. They called it ‘guts on toast’.
Neither the stylist nor Cosmopolitan India have responded to the post yet. We shall update this copy when they do.
